Adjusting template to meet prep timeline

I am going to be starting (actually re-starting) the Strength I template in a couple weeks to prep for my first meet. Two questions about the process below:

  1. It’s a 13 week program of course, how do I best account for the fact that I may not be able to have 13 uninterrupted weeks of training to prepare? A couple of instances of potential travel may impact training, but exactly how it will impact it I am not sure. Should I start the program a week early to give some flex time in the programming? Or are there certain weeks that are more/less important that I could cut a week if I had to with minimal impact? Asking if there is a preferred way to handle this.

  2. Do you have a podcast or article that goes into some detail on the progression of the templates, specifically the block types. Developmental, Specialization, Sports form, etc? I could guess what the objective is based on the programmed sets/reps scheme, but being a little more informed on the purpose of each phase might help me be more self sufficient on when/how to adjust a template to fit a specific time range.

Thank you!

HL288,

Thanks for the questions and good luck at your meet!

I don’t think I would prospectively change the training program, but rather adapt it to your needs as you go. I wouldn’t necessarily cut any of the weeks without knowing more context. Still, my preferred way of doing adjusting the templates to line up with a meet is to work backwards from the meet day, e.g. if the meet is 11-weeks out, start on week 3 of the 13-week template.

  1. We don’t have that at this time outside of our programming podcasts, articles, template-associated PDF’s, etc.

Sounds good, thanks for the feedback. I’ll attempt to proceed on schedule and if things get squirrely reset to the approporiate # of weeks out. I wasn’t sure if there would be a recommendation a la “whatever you do make sure you hit the deload”, or “Weeks 2 - 5 tend to contribute more than weeks 8 - 9” but I get there are probably many variables at play here based on how the training happens to be going.
