Any benefit to taking collagen if a I am already getting adequate total protein?

Salutations! I am using whey protein as a supplement to my diet (I am 50 and I think nearing the end of LP phase of barbell training) to make sure I am getting enough protein. Recently I have become intrigued by the possibility of a benefit of taking a quality hydrolyzed collagen for connective tissue/joint benefits. When I looked into it a bit I see that (for example, Great Lakes collagen hydrolysate) this stuff is 90% a mix of amino acids–those found in collagen. So, it got me wondering, if a person is already getting a good amount of protein from diet plus a whey supplement, is there any additional benefit to adding hydrolized collagen on top of this? Is there something about the amino acid profile of collagen that would be beneficial even for someone getting a decent amount of total protein through diet and whey? I don’t have any serious joint issues and simply want to do what is reasonable to keep the joints healthy as I continue to train. Thank you.

There’s some low quality evidence (IMO) that taking collagen may benefit connective tissue, but I don’t think it’s that cut and dry. That said, if you want to play around with supplementing collagen for this purpose that’s cool with me. I would consider it separate from your daily protein intake.

Hmmm… Interesting, Can you talk about why collagen is considered separate from our daily protein intake?

It’s a very, very, very low quality protein dietarily.

@Jordan_Feigenbaum You know I hate the fact that the three “very’s” before the low quality protein made me look up and read a bunch of stuff as to why it’s low quality … i’m such a nerd!!! In other news my dreams of amazing skin that looks 20 years younger and sultry thick fantastical hair by injesting collegen have also been shattered into a billion pieces … thanks for that :(…

For that you’ll need essential oils, obviously.
