I train at 9pm so I’ve had all day to consume energy before I lift. However, I will be switching to 5 am due to family logistics and work. Do you have recommend ations for getting the proper energy to lift that early? I heard you on IG live one time talk about a oatmeal soaked protein shake. How do you make it ? Thank you doc
So in both of these cases I’d probably do a scoop of whey plus some instant oats (or similar carb). When training at night, I’d slug that down post workout and if training first thing in the AM, I’d have it immediately upon rising (with some caffeine).
I just wanted to give my two cents that I’ve tried this for a couple of early morning workouts in a row (previously having always trained without eating) and really like it. It’s easy on the stomach and actually pretty tasty, depending on how you make it. I use milk, oats, peanut butter, and protein.
I’ve seen this advice a few times at this point (search function people!), but I’m unclear on one point:
When you say “slug” or “slam” do you mean drink? I have to eat oats (even overnight or instant) with a spoon. The sensation of drinking them is sickening to me. Even blending them is a no-go. The idea of getting carbs and protein taken care of in a shake is very alluring, though. Are there other ways to accomplish this without the chunky texture?
You can eat it with a spoon, that’s just fine. You could try using a blender to make it more appealing to you, but it really doesn’t matter.
You could make a bowl of oatmeal and mix the whey into it.
I don’t know what Jordan or Leah’s thoughts on rice milk are, but at 23g carbs per 8oz serving, I’ve used it as a pretty tasty liquid carbohydrate source to mix with Whey Rx before!
I use a magic bullet blender and it does a really good job of blending oats, completely smooths it out, you wouldn’t even know they were in there. Just blend it for a good 60 seconds and no chunks of anything left.
I have been eating Kodiak Power Cakes mixed with an egg and milk for about two months now. I really feel more energetic and don’t have a post-workout crash. I would love to get the good Drs. opinion.
Yeah don’t expect to use a straw on this concoction. It gets the job done and is tasty, but it’s far from a “drink” even if you blend it.
you can buy oat bran instead of oatmeal. It is a “powder” like any supplements
Your body will adapt pretty quickly to morning training. I live in AZ and lift in my garage, so in the summers I always have to transition into early 5am morning lifting (lifting in 115 degree heat, no thank you). The first year I did it at first I was miserable and about ~5-10% weaker on all my lifts. But after a few weeks I adjusted and my strength in the morning equaled out to my strength later in the day. Moreover, that adaptation doesn’t go away for me even when I go to evening lifting throughout the winter. For instance, I started the morning transition this week after ~7 months of evening training, and there has been 0 strength/RPE difference for me compared to last week when I was lifting in the evening. All I have prior to training is a glass of OJ and Gainz RX and I’m good to go. I eat a big breakfast post workout, and that seems to work out pretty well for me. Of note is that I also do typically eat 350-400g of carbs per day, so my glycogen stores are definitely at a good level. With less carbs I probably would still have some issues.
I find that if you put instant oats, banana, milk and protein in a blender it all binds together. If you do the same without the banana a good chunk of the oats will settle at the bottom of the shaker.
I’m fine with rice milk.
Fine by me.
