can I train for a 10 mile race while lifting?

Hey Jordan,

I’ve been training for almost a year now, started with the sslp after doing silly bullshit for a month or so, now I’m on my second pass at the bridge 1.0 ( first pass was cut short at week 5 due to a car accident which resulted in a 3 month layoff). On week 6 now so I’m considering what to do after the conclusion of the program. I want to continue lifting and getting strong, but I also have signed up for a 10 mile race in May (broad street run in philly), at the behest of one of my more cardio inclined buddies.

Any suggestions on how to structure my lifting to allow for the running training? I’ve never run anything more than a 5k before, so I’m going to have to devote some decent resources toward the running (thinking 2 or 3 runs a week, one of which will be a longer 5+ mile run). Not planning on breaking any records, but I do want to be able to run the whole thing at a reasonable pace.

Love your guys content. Until I got into powerlifting style training I was never able to find an exercise routine I could stick with. Training has literally changed my life, as I was a weak 210 lb smoker a year ago. Now I am in the best shape of my life and kicked the butts for good! And you guys have been a not inconsequential part of that journey!

Great work so far! Glad things have been going well in your training.

We do have an endurance template for this sort of thing, if that interests you.

If not, we’d recommend doing some running as your GPP work, starting with 1-2 sessions per week, and gradually increasing to 2-3 sessions per week. You could do something like 25-30 mins @ RPE 6-7 (as it seems you have done), and/or include a higher intensity interval day (though this isn’t strictly required).
