Cut calories after exceeding?

Hello. Hope you are doing well.

If I eat 1000 extra calories one day , then should I cut 1000 calories spread over the next 3-4 days? I have been tracking my calories in MFP for couple of months now. It has been insightful. (When I did nutrition coaching a while back I was reluctant to do it. But for some reason I got it into and I can see the benefits).

Another aside, I read Burn book based on Jordan’s 2022 boom recommendations; found it to be insightful.

PoH,

Thanks for the post and glad you liked the book. I really enjoyed talking to Dr. Pontzer on our podcast as well (linked here).

In general, day-to-day energy intake is quite dynamic. Some days will be lower and some days higher, but the energy balance equilibrium is struck over a much longer time than 1-day or 1 -week. That is to say, the net of energy intake vs energy used is tabulated over weeks and months, not days. It is likely you would spontaneously consume less energy in the days following overconsumption. This is true even when tracking. That said, I would not recommend reducing energy intake consciously after overeating. Just let it go and move forward
