Eggs?

I have 7 chickens and they lay approx 3-4/day during winter & 5-6/day during summer. How do you recommend integrating eggs into my diet without being excessive?

Anything good or bad about putting the occasional raw egg into a whey protein shake? I usually use a scoop of WPI and 1-1.5 cups of 2% milk.

I have read that the protein in cooked eggs is more “bioavailable” than the protein of a raw egg. Is there any truth to that?

MWC,

We have no formal egg recommendations, however we do recommend individuals keep their total daily saturated fat intake under 10% of total daily calories. The Science of Red Meat and Health | Barbell Medicine

We would not recommend consuming raw eggs and yes, cooked eggs are more bioavailable than raw eggs- though this is relatively unimportant.

Thanks, Jordan.

Could you please explain why the bioavailability of egg protein is relatively unimportant?

Sure, however I’d first ask you why would it be important? And if that reason is not significant, then perhaps that is why it’s relatively unimportant

Fair enough.

If a significant reason for consuming eggs is their protein content, then consuming them in a form that maximizes the effective quantity of said protein would be beneficial/important.

In other words…if I’m going to consume 4 eggs per day and the protein content of a raw egg is 4g while the protein content of a cooked egg is 8g, then 16g vs 32g seems significant enough to prioritize not being lazy and cooking said eggs.

Maybe my understanding of “bioavailability” is not accurate?

I disagree. You don’t need to maximize the effective quantity, but rather you want to obtain the maximal benefit, if any, from your food. There’s really no difference here with respect to muscle protein synthesis, but the risk of infection and no clear benefit makes me advise against raw egg consumption.

Got it. Thank you.
