Thanks for the great podcast, it was really interesting and informative. I was wondering what your thoughts are on the common modifications recommended for women by the SS community (I’m recalling these from the BB Logic podcast and a few SS podcasts and some SS articles). These revolve around the idea that women have a less efficient neuromuscular junction and there exhibit things like having a 5RM much closer to their 1RM than a male, etc. My questions are:
When coaching women, do you approach RPE assessment differently? Is there some modification you have ever made when using the RPE calculator (suppose this would also apply for men at different points along the spectrum of athleticism)?
What do you think of the common SSLP modification of switching from 3 sets of 5 to 5 sets of 3 for women? Same question for using 2 sets of 3 for DL instead of 1 set of 5.
Finally, I’ve also heard it stated many times that women tolerate higher volume bc they can’t work at a high enough intensity to stress themselves as much as men. Do you think this is true, and also is it even useful in the context of programming since you’d just be building up the client’s work capacity regardless of volume “tolerance”.
On a related note I liked Austin’s appearance on More Female Strength. I think there is a real dearth of inclusive content focused on getting women doing heavy barbell training. Maybe you could consider a female-issue crossover episode on BBM with Cassi Niemann and Katherine Bickford… isn’t the whole point of podcasts for everyone to be on each others podcast in a big incestuous morass?
Thanks!
