First Rep of a Deadlift Set

Hi BBM,

I was curious about why the first rep of many of my deadlift sets might “feel” slower (right off of the ground) than the subsequent reps? Have any of you experienced this personally or with clients? Is this generally a positioning issue or a mental one? Am I just not used to pulling hard until the second rep?

Yes, this is common, and it could be your starting position and it most certainly can be mental. :-). Can’t know for sure, so the idea is to not overthink it, know that heavy deadlifts are heavy, and assess the set as a whole.
