Can you think of a reason why I would have recurring, performance-limiting pain in my forearm from doing back work with an overhand grip, but am largely able to train as normal with any other type of grip?
This has been a running issue for about 10 years. I first experienced it during a session of weighted pull ups and have found that with experimenting how to work around it that underhand and neutral grips generally don’t bother it. It seems to require both overhand part and some degree of elbow flexion because it has never caused a problem when deadlifting (overhand hook grip or straps) and only rarely on shrugs when I get sloppy with the reps. When the pain is present it can be anywhere on a diagonal strip from about an inch or so above the elbow on the lateral side, and then with the forearm pronated, to anywhere to a point about halfway down the forearm on a strip that runs diagonally towards the thumb when the forearm is pronated. The worse the pain, the more concentrated it is towards the elbow.
In the grand scheme it isn’t a terrible issue if I can still largely train by just picking alternative exercises but Im a bit frustrated that after 10 years of continuing to train regularly and in a sensible way that doesnt aggravate it if I chose to do pull ups tomorrow I probably would have to cut the session short.
