Currently running Bridge 3.0 and intend to run PB1 afterward. I’m planning to start conservatively adding BJJ 2x/week.
Generally, 1 BJJ session is 2-hours with 1-1.5 hours of drilling and instruction @ RPE =< 6 and 30 min sparring @ RPE 7-8. The other session is 1-hour with probably 30 min learning and 30 min sparring at similar RPEs.
I assume all your templates generally have a similar GPP framework as Bridge 3.0, with conditioning and hypertrophy accessory work, restructured depending on the template goal. With Bridge 3.0 and all your other templates in mind, I want to ask:
Would you suggest replacing GPP days entirely with BJJ? For example, while running a template like Bridge 3.0 with GPP 2x/week, would you suggest doing 1x/week GPP given 1/week of BJJ, and 0x/week of GPP given 2x/week of BJJ?
What GPP, if any, would you suggest doing alongside regular BJJ practice to enhance athletic performance (ie LISS Cardio, accessory work like arms, abs, upper back etc.)?
If BJJ weekly frequency exceeded GPP weekly frequency, how might you adjust your GPP recommendations to the prior questions? An example would be doing BJJ 4x/week while running one of your templates prescribing 2x/week GPP .
I would not replace the GPP days with BJJ. I would continue to do the GPP work, especially the conditioning, in addition to the BJJ work. Conditioning is extremely important for health and BJJ. I would not skip/replace it.
All of the training would change if doing BJJ 4x/wk. For what it’s worth, I do not think doing BJJ 4x/wk is a good idea for recreational BJJ athletes who are not preparing for a match. That’s a lot of training exposure and load, you know?
Thanks for your input. Honestly in the BJJ community I think 3-4x week is average for the hobbyist with some training 1-2x a day which is crazy. People get obsessed when starting lol. All without proper or any S&C too, which is a recipe for disaster.
I’m finding it hard to fit in the time to do all the GPP - obviously conditioning is important as you’ve said so I’ll continue with that, but I might not be able to do the accessory work. However, if I were to try to fit in some accessory GPP, which would you prioritize? Most and least important accessories? Some weeks I may have extra time to do multiple accessory accessories, but others I might be able to only do 1 or 2 like core or upper back.
Yea. I get it and agree that the training load is likely too high for most when rolling 4x/wk. I don’t think that message would be well received though
If it were me, I’d aim to do the conditioning first and trunk work second. After that, I’d use any additional time to rest.
