hip bursitis or strain.

Hey Docs,

Been dealing with what seems like hip bursitis or strain for 6 months now after one bad squat rep. Probably loaded inappropriately to get me there, but it has been an annoying journey.

Some weeks are better than others, and I do not expect to be pain free but would love for it to be less interfering with my daily life and tasks.

Pain is almost constant down right leg, mostly in the hip area (glute and up by right side of spine) and hamstring when extending the knee fully. Often in the calf on the side sort of too. Hurts to brace, tolerable but quite uncomfortable. Weirdly, hurts to bend my head down standing or seated (seated more so) even when not moving hip. Also, after sitting such as in the car or after a meal, there is a big ache after standing up (like a charlie horse or muscle cramp).

Thought if it was something like the SI Joint or a tendinopathy that it would have corrected itself by now with my training modifications. Lowered weight, volume, frequency, and am doing more tempo work at a tolerable range of motion once a week for squats and deadlifts (less than 40% of previous weights) to see how things adjust compared to when I was doing 3-4 exercises a week and regressing sometimes the last few months. Trying to return to baseline or even below that with much less daily pain.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Can you describe a little more what initially started symptoms? How often does the pain run down your leg and into your calf?

Was warming up to squat during 12 week strength, for 3 @ 8. On my first working set after a normal warmup, felt a light pop at the bottom of the squat, got up still and racked the weight but it hurt beyond discomfort after about 10 minutes of trying to move and squat bodyweight, so I called it for the day and went home. Almost every day the pain goes into the calf and ankle, it is hard to pinpoint however since sometimes if feels like its pain coming from the ankle up to the calf. It is more of a dull ache pain rather than a sharp shooting one. I do feel very light pins and needles in the effected leg’s foot every day, particularly if I am on my feet a lot in the day (I work all day walking around). Pain is most noticable getting up from seated, sitting for a long period of time, and in the morning before getting up out of bed.
