How do you handle breathing during higher rep bench press sets?

I have been holding my breath as long as possible during my 10 rep bench sets, which means banging out the early reps about as fast as I can. The main reason for this is I think that breathing will loosen my setup a little.

But I’ve noticed in other high rep lifts (e.g. squat, DL) my results are better if I pause slightly between each rep, pacing myself as a runner would.

Do you think it’s beneficial to avoid breathing as long as possible or am I tiring myself more this way? (I usually breath after rep 5, 6, or 7 I think depending on how taxed I was at the start of the set).

I personally only hold my breath for the unrack and
then the first rep, afterwards I’ll take a breath and rebrace at the top of each rep.

I breathe during the bench press. I don’t keep a particularly tight setup on the bench. I try to keep my back tight, but I don’t really drive with my legs and don’t arch my back at all. Perhaps that makes it easier to breathe without losing my setup.

Thanks guys I’ll experiment with breathing between reps.
