Rest between reps

Any general guideline for max length of time between reps on the squat and or deadlift? I’m a skinny guy (6’0" 150lb prior to LP, 165 after) and have avoided cardio for years fearing burning any extra calories so my cardio sucks. Now that I’ve put on some weight I’m gonna start addressing that directly, but for the time being many of my sets on squat and deadlift often feel limited by my breathing rather than muscle fatigue/weakness. I find myself wanting to wait and try to catch my breath. How many seconds or breaths would you say I should try to stay under between reps so that I’m still doing a proper set and not a bunch of singles. I would take a few seconds, maybe 2-5, between reps. Don’t think about catching your breath or anything else other than squatting or deadlifting the next rep. Rest 4-5 minutes between work sets.
