Is fever a limiting factor?

Hi,

I recently got into an argument with my friend about training with fever. I said that it would be more beneficial to train than not to train. If one feels like training and if there is no chance to get other people sick.
He thinks that it is not a good idea to train whilst having a fever cause it could prolong the sickness or even make it considerably worse. (Like myocarditis or similar)

When googleing this, I found very many sites and articles about how it is a huge no-no to train if you have fever and even the Finnish healtcare sites says this. But I have found only one study to support that point of view. Febrile Illness in the Athlete - PMC

What is your take on this dfever thing? Do you have any resources to support training with fever?

Very many thanks.

I don’t think we have enough direct evidence to make confident claims about these risks in humans.

If I was ill enough to be having high spiking fevers to 101-102+ I would probably not be training hard, though if I felt I could still be active in some fashion I would certainly do that.

Thanks for the answer.

This is nice to hear.

I’m thinking that if I can train without dying or feeling totally destroyed, I will. And I also did so yesterday (I have a little flu) and I feel no different today.
It would be nice to have some kind of auto regulation system to account for these kind of things… heh.

I’m still wondering that where these claims comes from then? Everywhere I look it it “Do NOT train or exercise if you have feever!!!”… Is it just “logic”?..
