On top of breaking a finger in three places about three of weeks back after a dirtbiking misadventure, I also came down heavily on my right foot and knee. I was prescribed some codeine / 10mg oxy pain relief for the hand but obviously it numbed everything else.
Bottom line is I hate the way they make me feel, so only ended up taking some before bed in order to sleep for a few days after and that was it. Now, no anything.
I was back to training as best I could last week, only fly in the ointment - apart from a semi useless hand - is as knee flexation increases, approaching the bottom of a squat, so to does a intense pain right in the back of the joint. Oddly, the loading doesn’t seem to make much difference. Hurts almost as much doing a body weight squat.
To the point, are you doing yourself a disservice by not managing pain and just ‘nutting it out’? Because now I find myself almost preemptively wincing as I drop lower in the squat, or even walking up stairs.
For the sake of a popping a couple of paracetamol when necessary, am just making life difficult for no good reason?
I’m not averse to medication when necessary mind you, but I could count the number of Tylenol I take per year on one hand.
Sorry to hear about the recent issues. This would likely require a consult to give better advice. Contact Us | Barbell Medicine
Overall, we do not advocate for “not managing pain” or symptoms. Rather, we advocate for a better understanding of the complexity of the painful experience and how best to approach the topic based on current research evidence. If you are finding symptoms worsen during training and afterwards, then it is likely alterations and modifications need to be made. Given this is related to a recent acute trauma, I think a consult is warranted.
