Low back pain

Hello
are there any weightlifting exercises you recommmend to strength the low back, spine and para spinal muscles? Or is that mostly going to be stretched and PT type work like bird dogs, bridging etc? Just wondering if any weightlifting exercises like squats, good morning, deadlift, any others that can actually strengthen these muscles also and relieve the low back pain? Or would it stress the muscles and worsen it? PT has mostly resolved My pain.

Hi,

We have ample free content available on the topic of pain, between the website, our podcast, and YouTube channel.

Our general approach to managing pain is outlined here: Pain in Training: What To Do?

A basic approach for general pain in the gym is discussed here:

We also have several podcast episodes, e.g. episode 131 discussing this topic in more detail.

There are no “special” exercises here, nor do we routinely recommend/use the kinds of “PT exercises” you describe in your post. A lot of exercises can be useful to strength the back; however, a lack of strength is not necessarily a cause of low back pain. Similarly, adding more exercises or searching for a specific exercise is not always the right move in the context of pain. Recommend spending some time with our available content on this topic, and if you are interested in individualized advice for your situation, a consultation with our rehab team would be a good option.
