Jordan & Austin,
Curious what your opinions are of Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs) for treating mild OSA. Are they as effective as CPAP machines? Are they a good first source of treatment since they are less expensive and less invasive than wearing a mask? Asking for an irritated wife.
Thanks,
Ben
Most studies comparing oral appliances to CPAP show that CPAP is superior at improving the apnea-hypopnea index and oxygen saturation. However, they do not show superiority for symptoms like daytime sleepiness or sleep architecture. The studies also show that patients tend to prefer and adhere better to oral appliances, making them a good initial choice for a patient with mild OSA.
