Mattress Problems?

I often wake up with low back pain or neck tightness, usually accompanied with a headache, after going to sleep with no back pain. I was wondering if my mattress/pillows could be causing this problem or if that is just a marketing ploy used by mattress manufacturers and I’m noceboing myself into pain. I experienced the pain prior to getting back into strength training after a 6 year hiatus and have been doing the SSLP for about 6 weeks with no change in back pain upon waking up. The pain usually goes away by evening. I am considering buying a new mattress but I wanted to ask doctors who have researched pain science before making such a big purchase. I currently have a memory foam mattress that is somewhat soft, if that helps.

Thanks for the question. I typically recommend people find a mattress they subjectively feel comfortable with. Pain is a multi-factorial experience. You may be able to purchase a new mattress and find relief but this may or may not be related to anything to do with the mattress; most likely much more to do with the marketing you are referencing. Often times, taking long breaks from training and then returning to training at too high a load (volume and/or intensity) may be a contributing factor. How long have you been training since returning? Have you noticed symptoms with any other “triggers” throughout the day? Is the pain impeding you from doing anything functionally throughout the day? Regarding tightness, this is a bit of a nebulous term that is meaningful to the person who is experiencing awareness to an area that doesn’t feel the way they expect it to. Headaches are a bit more nuanced and requires more of an evaluation to assess primary or secondary variables correlated with headaches. Happy to discuss further.

The most significant factor for back sleepers is firmness and support. On the off chance that your mattress is excessively delicate or soft, your body will sink and cause back pain. You will require one that is sufficiently soft to give pressure alleviation yet offers enough support.
