A friend of mine was having some issues and after seeing his doctors and a cardiologist was told he had a myocardial bridge. He’s run marathons for 20 years and as he got older and the maladies with marathon running started to become an issue he decided to get into strength training and shortly after received this news. He was originally told to stop running, then under some push back his doc said to walk if he feels chest pain. He’s questioning if it is wise to start training or what kind of limitations he should put on himself.
Are there some specific concerns around training with this?
Unfortunately without knowing a lot more of the history and clinical evaluation here it’s difficult to provide a comment on the matter, particularly via this forum.
Myocardial bridging is a really variable phenomenon; often it is of no real significance, whereas in other cases severe bridging can cause complications. If he’s been running marathons for 20 years without chest pain or other cardiac complications it’s less likely that this is something worth being concerned about in the context of strength training, but again, this is not individual advice for your friend given the inadequate background information here. Would need individual consultation to tease out more.
