Nuanced back pain situation

Jordan & Austin,

This is my first post on this forum, so I’d like to start with thanking all of you guys for your passion and enthusiasm that you put into this website and your videos! It is of GREAT help!

Nevertheless, I ran into a situation, that I yet couldn’t find a solution to.

Background story: My girlfriend had a really bad time with a herniated disk some years ago (being totally untrained at that time), which took her months to recover. Unfortunately, the whole thing started the day after she tried squats and deadlifts for the first time in her life. Certainly not the best coincidence.
After several years with no back pain and doing only moderate endurance exercises, I could convince her to give weight training a second chance and start a linear progression. Three weeks into the program, she’s now feeling a minor tightness in her lower back, that scares the hell out of her and lets her think about ending her short training career and never touching a barbell again.

What would you do to make her worry less? Why is taking the risk to get hurt again better than not to train at all?
I’m running out of arguments here, so any help is highly appreciated. I mean: What you gonna do? Not train?!

Thanks,
Jan

See if something like this resonates with her:

If not, she may benefit from a consult with one of our rehab guys.

Just wanted to thank you for making so much good information on pain available. Helped me get back into barbell lifting when I thought there was no way.
Sending these links to my brother who has chronic back pain.

Thanks, Austin! I will give them a try.
