Greetings
I would like to start by saying this site is a great resource and very helpful for me as a Personal Trainer & Strength Coach - Thank you
I have read many of your articles that talk to the fear/social aspect of how people react to pain and I think I had my first experience with this today
We were working up to a max Deadlift and she said " I dont know if I can lift that weight. It’s too heavy. It’s going to hurt my back"
Her form and speed off the floor were really good as we were working up to 165lb - so I reassured her that it was just her fear and that it was going to be great
Well… after the lift (which had good form and was NOT a grind to bring up) she kinda freaks out that she has tweaked her back.
I took her through some movement patterns and asked questions to see if any red flags, but it just seemed like a muscle strain.
When I asked about why she was so upset, it was because this injury was going to keep her from training and reaching her goal of losing weight.
I tried to reassure her that this is likely just a strain and that I can find ways to keep her training while her back heals.
She thinks it’s more serious and is going to see a chiropractor and physio and doesnt think she should train or do any physical activity until her back is back to 100%
Do you have any suggestions on calming down people after an injury? In particular, if they are not well versed in anatomy & physiology?
(I tried sharing some of your videos and articles with her, but I think she may not get some of the terminologies)
Thanks in advance for your response
Mel
