Obese post-novice seeking guidance

Hi Jordan,

I’m a 40 y/o male with a 51" waist (6’4", 320 lbs). I’ve been training for about 2 years, and while I’m not very strong (500 DL, 405 SQ, 300 BP), the novice gains are gone. I’m probably more on the unathletic/anabolically resistant side.

From your articles and videos, I’ve realized I need to get my waist size down (and that doing so is more important than squatting 500 lbs). What I’m wondering is, how aggressive should I be? Would I be better off losing 1-2 lbs per week and trying to maintain strength? Or should I go on an “extreme” cut and plan to make up lost strength later? I’d really like to squat 500, lol.

If it helps, I’ve tracked my food a bit, and maintenance is around 3550 calories/day.

Thanks so much for doing this.

Hi Panda,

Thanks for posting here and I hope you’re well.

I would try and rapidly lose weight and not worry about the weight on the barbell, though I would still train. You have a lot of time left to get stronger, but if you don’t address the body composition you might not have as much time.
