Drs.
I woke up last Thursday with pain under my left shoulder pain. I guessed I slept on it wrong. When trying to do skull crushers or unracking on a bench I would get this sharp knife pain under my shoulder blade and it is affecting my lifts. Today its not as painful as on Thursday but It affect my overhead press and I had to drop the weight significantly. I’m wondering how does one get pain under the shoulder blade and what I can do to remedy it. I read anywhere from a broken rib to a misalignment of the spine, I think I’d rather learn from a doctor rather than a website.
We aren’t going to be able to explain to you exactly how this happened. Sometimes pain just happens without a clear / specific “reason”. What’s far more important is how we respond to it – this does not appear to be associated with a mechanism of injury where I’d be concerned about a broken rib. And if you’ve listened to much of our content on pain, you will understand that “misalignments of the spine” are not a thing to be concerned with.
We would recommend continued activity and training, though it may be necessary to modify the load and/or exercises (as described here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdwj5ORPmX0 ), and this will most likely improve on its own.
