In the barbell medicine guide to tendinopathy, it is recommended that a tempo component is added to the concentric and eccentric portions of whatever movement you are doing.
In a stronger by science article (linked below) it is suggested that when dealing with a patellar tendinopathy, the tempo component is not necessary in the concentric portion of a squat due to the reduced forces being applied to the tendon when compared to the eccentric portion.
I’m curious as to what yall’s opinions are on this.
However, we typically start with tempo in both directions primarily as a method of forcing people to limit the load below their symptom threshold, since the majority of lifters who go through this process are reluctant to reduce loading enough to mitigate symptoms. As symptoms improve, the concentric tempo and rep ranges decrease towards normal. For someone who does not need this, they can get by fine without concentric tempo – provided that more rapid, explosive/ballistic movements do not increase sensitivity either.
