[podcast] PCSK9 Costs

Just thought I’d mention that a lot of the PCSK9’s have manufacturer copay cards. For example, I was approved for Repatha. The MSRP for 3 months is $2,000. After insurance, it was ~$800 out of pocket for me (I have a high deductible plan). Then with the Repatha copay card, it brought it down to $45 at the pharmacy register.

This is comparable to my generic statin cost.

While those who are prescribed PCSK9i and have insurance may be able to get a reasonable price point (for them) for these agents, this is not the reality for most people without specific indications that qualify for them for PCSK9i (or insurance). Additionally, 45 bucks is about 10x the cost of a statin and ezetimibe.

I think PCSK9i can be useful for many individuals, but I do think the cost and accessibility remain prohibitive for many.
