RPE...just...one...more...time...

Docs/Coaches:

I write this with some trepidation, because I can easily imagine anguished cries coming from BBM…“another question about RPE? Really?” In my defense, I’ve scoured the Forum for other threads that might answer this, but I can’t find any.

I’m ready to take my lumps, so here goes.

Should RPE be assessed with any consideration to form? Or should it just be how many more reps you could crank out if someone held a gun to your head, regardless of how ugly those reps might be? To me, there’s a distinct difference between feeling able to do 2 more squats with good form (an “8”) and feeling able to do 2 more squats (also an “8”) only if they look more like good mornings.

I’ve been leaning toward the latter interpretation (gun to the head) for a while now, and I’m wondering if I’m chronically overestimating my RPEs.

OK, I’m done, and I promise never to ask another question about RPE.

Thanks as always, y’all are great,

I don’t think that form should have a marked input on RPE rating if you’re using it (RPE) as a proxy for reps in reserve. That said, similar movement standards should be maintained from rep-to-rep, e.g. squatting to the same depth, not hitching a deadlift, keeping your butt on the bench, etc.

Hope that makes sense.
