Shift Work and melatonin

Hi BBM

On a recent YouTube video, Dr Feigenbaum mentioned shift work can have ‘gnarly’ health effects. I’ll be starting shift work early next year. I was wondering what can be done to mitigate any negative health effects caused by shift work?

The other thing was, melatonin was mentioned during a recent video too. Is this useful for people changing shift patterns? Is so, what dosages would you recommend?

Many thanks

Mark

Maintaining as “regular” of a sleep schedule as possible, as well as continued training, are probably the best things you can do. Melatonin may have minor effects during a “transition” phase, but nothing groundbreaking either.

Interesting. I have a ‘theoretical’ concern that taking melatonin may inhibit natural production. Instead I modulate my light exposure. BLUE LIGHT https://www.re-timer.com/ for when I want to ‘be morning’ and ORANGE FILTER glasses for a couple of hours before sleeping.

Thanks Dr Baraki.
