Should I lower my A1C if it's been ~5.8 for years despite healthy lifestyle and if so how?

Hello doctors,

I wanted to ask if I should focus on lowering my A1C, and if so, how to go about doing that given my already somewhat healthy lifestyle?

Here is a history of some markers. I’m 5’8”, male, and currently 40 y/o.

Family history, my dad’s side has CVD and diabetes risk. My dad has been on Crestor for well over a decade or two to keep his LDL at bay. Parents are both South Asian ethnicity (southern India).

For my LDL and ApoB, I asked my PCP to prescribe me Rosuvastatin 5 mg and just started. I plan to test in 3 months to see how it goes. Goal long-term is to get LDL below 100 and total cholesterol below 200, and stay on it for life if needed. I’m mildly wondering about side effects in re: to my training performance (what I can expect), but I saw what Dr. Baraki posted elsewhere about the SAMSON trials showing 90% of reported adverse effects of statins were nocebo-like in nature. I think I’m good here.

It’s my A1C consistently being over that 5.7% that I’m wondering about. Given the readings but also my lifestyle (more on that below), should I put effort into trying to lower it? If so, how?

My PCP doesn’t seem too concerned about it, and mentioned I could consider Metformin. But I wanted to see how I could approach this with lifestyle first, as I think there is room for me to make some adjustments.

On that note, in terms of the health priorities you guys published, I meet all of them either fully (e.g. been training with your guys’ templates for 6 years with some great PRs!, always a waist below 34 inches) or with some room to improve (could increase my conditioning up from ~60 min/week, increase fiber from current average of 20-25g/day, sleep more than 5-6 hours/day, etc). I’ve attached a document with more detail:

detail.txt (2.3 KB)

But wondering if I should put stock into getting my A1C lower or would that be a TWOD given my context and just continue doing what I’m doing for overall health.

Thanks!

Hi there. Thanks for the post. It’s good to see you again.

This sort of individual-level health advice is not really something we can manage via the forum, as additional information is needed for guidance. This would be best suited for a consultation, which is available here.
