Starting position for bench press?

Rather than starting with the “eyes on the other side of the bar” what’s the downside to starting with the shoulders on the other side of the bar?

since it’s not taught this way I’m assuming there is a reason? I train at home in a rack and do not have a spotter. I’ve always thought the closer my shoulders are to the bar, the less distance I have to move the bar above my shoulders after unracking.

If you are too close to the pins where the barbell is racked, you may hit them on the way up as the bar isn’t far enough out of the rack in the position you’re describing. Then again, it might be fine and you may be pretty close to the position we’re describing as well.

I’m probably closer to the position you describe, but I scoot my ass up towards the rack. I find the closer I can get my shoulders, the easier the unrack (at least I perceive it to be). Since the bar path is not straight down I’ve never hit the pins.

What are your thoughts on these Monolift rack attachments? They are not crazy expensive compared to an actual Monolift. Literally setup exactly where you need to be… push straight up and do the set.

They definitely make things easier in this situation. We know many people who own and like them.
