Suggestion for template after SS NLP

Hello,

I’ve just begun to get into the Barbell Medicine site and I’m really glad I found it. Here’s a brief version of my story.

  1. Began Starting Strength NLP July 2018
  2. Had a few interruptions to training so restarted/reset a few times
  3. For a short stretch tried to switch to a more bodybuilding focused routine and quit due to rapid loss of strength - panicked and went back to SS
  4. I am at the end of LP again and want to move into something else in a more intelligent way I am 40 years old, 5’11" without previous lifting experience. During the last year I went from 164lbs to 190lbs. This is the most I have ever weighed. My squat has gone from 95lbs to 280lbs. Bench from 105 to 185. Press from 60 to 120. Deadlift from 135 to 315. I haven’t been doing Power Cleans but have instead been doing Barbell Rows, currently at 145lbs.

Obviously, I’ve wasted some time and could have been much further along, had I been a little more focused. That bieng said, I am not unpleased with my results so far.

I’m ready to move on. I’ve gained a lot of muscle. I haven’t gotten fat by any means but I am a little fluffy around the middle. I’d really like to focus a little time on looking better and more conditioning and mobility. As I have gotten stronger, I have lost a lot of flexibility and generally feel pretty stiff. I really don’t want to lose the strength I’ve gained and would prefer to keep building it. I want to buy one of the templates but not sure which one. I think I’d like to go for one of the hypertropy templates but not sure which one. I work out in a pretty good commercial gym with lots of equipment but It’s hard for me to go more than three times a week. At home, I have a C2 Rower so can use it for some conditioning at home.

What would be your suggestion for the best template now that I’d like to move on from SS NLP.

By the way, I’m so glad to have found a site and group of people who aren’t constantly making me feel like garbage for asking questions that go against teir dogma. God forbid I mention to any of the folks at SS that I would like to work on mobility…

Hey Daniel,

Welcome to the forum and nice work on your last year of training

I think powerbuilding 1 would be right up your alley given your goals, resources, etc.

Let us know how you do!

Thanks, Jordan. I appreciate your help. I’ll go for Powerbuilinng 1 and report back. Thanks again for all the great information.

I do have a follow-up question for you. It feels like I may have missed out on a lot of good information about training as a beginner since I followed Starting Strength instead of your beginner template. Especially when it comes to learning how to use RPE, etc. It also seems like there is information about conditioning that I certainly didn’t get from SS. Do you recommend I purchase the beginner template to get that additional information or will the Powerbuilding Template give me everything I need?

I think you would be just fine to start the powerbuilding template
