Tight kness

Hey doc.

For the past 6 weeks my knees has been noticeably tight while warming up for the squat, it’s tight enough that I cannot reach proper depth for the first couple of reps and it gets better as I do 2x warm up, 95, 135, 185 and so on.

I feel the tightness as I am approaching the bottom of the squat, and not so much as I am coming out of the squat.

There’s no pain associated with the tightness nor I have ever had pain in my knees, but what can be done to not feel the tightness in the first place?

I once put sleeves on for the entire warm up and I never felt any tightness, but I don’t want to rely on anything

I’ve been squatting 2 - 3 times a week for about two years and I have never felt any tightness in my knees until now.

A technical error with my knee I use to have (until identified and corrected with an SSC) is valgus knees. Even when in my days of caving them in, there would be no tightness.

I did some sprints for my GPP and no tightness at all.

Thanks!

Hi Paramveer, I want to point out a few things that are really reassuring. The first is that you said there is no pain, which is fantastic. You also said that this “tightness” is not causing you to miss training and gets better as you progressively add weight and do your working sets, which is also very encouraging. When we explain things in the body as tight it is kind of because we have a hard time using vocabulary to describe what we are actually feeling, this perceived tightness probably isn’t anything being “tight” but just a new feeling in your knee that is novel to you. I would also ask if you have significantly changed anything in your training the past 6 weeks? I am not one of docs and wont tell you what to do, but if it were me and I had no pain and no detriment in my performance due to “tightness”, I would keep training.
