tracking calories when in dining hall

Hello,

My goal has been trying to get bigger. I am partially eating in a dining hall so I am not able to track my foods exactly. This has been demotivating me. I am a guy who does not lke to make mistakes, and I hyperfocus on things. How can I hold myself accountable to my goals? Using my hand to measure things and break up plate according to portion sizes? I think this is the best way.

Charles,

I do not think hyper focusing on anything training or nutrition related is going to be helpful. I also don’t think you need to be exact here, or even count period. If you prefer tracking things, yes, using your hand to estimate portions you’re consuming would be useful. In general, your palm is ~ 4 ounces and your closed fist is 1 Cup. I really, really, really, really would not recommend perseverating over this or anything else training related.

Yes thanks. I am just a very picky guy. I like to see results. I have had a bad relationship with exercise in the past. I am a tall, lanky guy so seeing results can be much harder. Also, I like to feel strong. I also had a bad experience with scapular dyskinesis so I know exercise requires a lot of due diligence. Actual form for the exercise, nutrition, and exercise programming are things I am very interested in. There is a lot of knowledge. I like to do things optimally. This is really the first time I have been really seriously doing a program.

I can understand where you’re coming from and it definitely sounds like you have serious goals. That said, I think pushing for optimal usually ends up worse than a more moderate approach. Just my 0.02.
