Value of Lying Tricep Extensions

Rippetoe refers to lying tricep extensions as the 4th power lift. Coaches - what’s your point of view on utilizing them instead of bonus tricep press downs, with the intent of also reaping the supplemental benefits to benching/pressing? Also, what’s your point of view on their value as an excercise? I noticed they are not used on any of the templates I’ve purchased. Thanks!

I think he was quoting another lifter about the 4th power lift comment. That said, I think they’re an okay accessory for folks to do - though I haven’t had much success with them and typically program other tricep work for my lifters. I also think most people could stand more benching/pressing or alteration of programming prior to doing LTE’s.

Roger that - thanks!

Not second guessing Rip, but I think he may have been referring to JM Blakley and the JM press.
I’ve found these easier when the weight starts getting heavier since I train alone as I can work out of the rack. I’ve also seen Mike T knock out a set of 315 x 6, so they must be good.

Fair to assume Blakley new a thing or two about benching.

I do LTE’s when more tricep work is called for in my programming. Mainly because that’s what I have available. I don’t view them as any more or less useful as any other direct triceps work that you can tolerate.
