Zach's training log

I’m in the military and mostly do calisthenics and some running. I want to get stronger. I’m 33, 5’ 9", 174 pounds. Did some lifting in early high school due to football preps. Was afraid of barbells due to fear of injury later in adulthood. Im now ready to get strong again and be more resilient for jiu jitsu training and life. Got hurt 1.5 years ago due to a steroidal crazy training partner cranking my neck til it popped and using all body weight during drills. Im moving past a bad doctor recommendation at the time to never train again. Bad advice from someone in authority…

I’m leaving for a summer of training and school in a military training environment. I want to start the novice progression Monday morning. It will be stalled for two months for training but I figure now is the time to get stronger even for that.

Will post workouts! Thanks ahead of time for the encouragement. Loving all the great information and comraderie around here.

First workout of NLP.

squat
45 1x5
45 1x5
65 1x5
95 1x5
115 3x5

Press
45 2x5
55 1x5
65 1x5
85 3x5

Deadlift
135 1x5
185 4x too heavy

Back feels pretty tight. Not fun. I shouldn’t have made that big a jump.

Also I don’t think I was engaging my hamstrings enough on the deadlifts.

Or, is it normal to have a little discomfort and warmth in your low back after your first deadlifting workout In 17 years?
