Bench strength training add-on for Hypertrophy I Template... How do?

Hello, Barbell Medicine Crew!

Thanks for the amazing content. I gained waaaaaay more strength and size from the Beginner Template than I ever did farting around with NLP. I finished the Beginner Template a month ago, I’m beginning Week Four of the Hypertrophy I Template, and I’m up shirt and pant sizes while dropping waist circumference. Y’all rock.

So why do I want to add bench strength training to the Hypertrophy I Template? Because last week my family decided to hold its Third Annual Chestgiving Bench Competition this Thanksgiving Day. Chestgiving is when the fellas gather at my dad’s house to bench their 1 RM and determine who’s Top Turkey. I’ve placed both years but this time I want the trophy. (There’s a trophy.)

THE FACTS

  1. We are 13 weeks away from the meet (Thanksgiving).
  2. I have seven more weeks of the Hypertrophy I Template (so I’ll end five weeks before the meet).
  3. My estimated bench 1 RM is 241.
  4. I can get the Strength I Template but I wanted to run out Hypertrophy I first.

THE QUESTIONS 1. How would I train for bench strength while running out the Hypertrophy I Template?
2. What should I do for the five weeks after Hypertophy I runs out? The first five weeks of Strength I?

Sounds like a cool Thanksgiving!

I probably would just do the upper body programming from Strength I while running the rest of the Hypertrophy I plan as-is. Should set you up for a nice bench PR :slight_smile:
