Better Recovery Post Surgery

Hey doc,

Soon I will be having surgery on my nose for double deviation, and heavy polyp removal.

Polyps are pretty bad apparently, when the ENT looked up my nose the first thing he said was “Wow”.

Based on my training history and progression, something is not right with my recovery, I have pinpointed down to my sleep.

I’ve always been told by almost everyone that’s slept near/next to me that my breathing does not sound right when I sleep.

Recently, for the past couple of months, I have been waking up to an extremely dry mouth (I have always been breathing through my mouth when I sleep). I try my best to drink a lot of water throughout the day, and would like to drink a lot before I go to bed to avoid the dry mouth, but if I wake up in the middle of the night to use the restroom, I find it hard to go back to bed.

Once I have the surgery and have an allergy test done, should I be able to sleep better (and in turn recover better) since I would be able to breath through my nose day and night?

Thanks doc.

I’m not sure how we’re supposed to predict this.

Maybe?

I spoke with my Sleep Doc about this situation, I originally went to him to check for Sleep Apnea based off some symptoms I am having and he told me to see an ENT.

I failed 2 at home sleep studies prior to seeing the ENT (because it only recorded nasal activity, and there was none due to congestion), and when I told my Sleep Doc about the nasal situation, CT Scan, and high possibility of surgery, he said he can write me a prescription for a CPAP but he highly urges me to have the surgery.

I’ve read a couple of studies that talked about the correlation with Nasal Congestion and Obstructive Sleep Apnea, have you had patients in a similar situation?

With all this said, would you still say the same in terms of me having better recovery (due to better sleep) or is it still a “Maybe?”
