Collar bone/neck pain (hard to describe)

Hi there,

A few weeks ago I woke up with pain in my right collar bone/lower neck area. I initially thought it was because I’d slept on my side, but the pain hasn’t gone away since, despite changing sleeping positions and taking a week off lifting whilst I was away on holiday.

It’s not a sharp or stabbing pain, more of an ache, and I only notice it when I turn my head completely to the left (causing pain in my right collar bone/neck), or if I push my shoulder blades back and lift my arms as if getting into the low bar squat position.

It hasn’t affected my training, and during training I only notice it when I squat, as getting into the squat position causes a stretch across the top front of my torso which causes the neck/collar bone ache. It subsides slightly after a few sets of squats but is still noticeable.

Any ideas what it may be? I don’t plan on changing anything as it’s not causing issues, I was just curious as it came on so suddenly.

Thanks

Hey Pat, symptoms that arise like this, without a mechanism, usually have some level of uncertainty as to why and how, but as long as they’re tolerable and don’t affect performance/function I’d try not to worry about it too much. Time will likely be on your side, with symptoms decreasing as the weeks go on. You already have a good mindset on continuing as planned, so you’re off to a great start. I would say it sounds musculature in nature, given the stretch sensation and neck rotation pattern, but it’s hard to be completely certain and pain is often more complex than just one tissue causing a symptom. If the symptoms change/worsen and/or affect performance, then I would follow up, otherwise I’d keep pressing on. Let us know if you have any other questions!
