Cutting for a meet

Hi there,

I did a quick search on the forums on this topic, but most of the weight loss topics are about longer term weight loss. I have a question about cutting for a meet. Getting ready for a meet in just over 4 weeks and using the 12WS template. I’m about 4-5 lbs above (in the morning) the weight class where I’d like to be (93kg). In order to maintain (or improve) strength before that point, am I better off doing a water cut closer to the meet or slowly losing the weight before the meet? I am not sure if 4-5 lbs in a month would even be considered slow.

I don’t have any experience cutting weight. I gained about 25 lbs over the past 18 months as I focused on strength training, did my first meet last Dec at 93kg, and now would like to do a second at 93kg as well, but I have deliberately been trying to gain weight over the last 4-5 months thinking i could lose a few lbs before this meet.

I would be interested in any advice that you might have on this topic.

(Btw, how do I know when I get a response on this thread outside of just checking it repeatedly. I’ve posted a couple of times, but don’t believe my posts were approved. Sorry for the newbie questions!)

Rowdy,

Thanks for the post and best of luck at the meet! You’re going to crush it.

I would try and lose a bit of weight prior to the meet since you’re going to have a 2 hour weigh in. If you have to do a little water cut the last week to make it under, that’s okay, but I’d advise losing weight prior to weigh ins.

All of these threads require approval. I think you can subscribe to them to get a notification for when they’re answered but admittedly, I’m not sure.

Thanks Jordan.

I’m now 10 days out from the meet and weighed in at 93.8kg first thing this morning (on what I hope is an accurate scale :). So I’ll probably maintain weight here and do a water cut for the last ~1kg. I’ve read your water cutting article a couple of times and in the scenario described in your article, your athlete is trying to cut a fair amount of weight (10 lbs). How would one alter the method for a smaller weight cut? I suspect it wouldn’t be quite as much salt and water consumption as prescribed?
