Foot Pain

Good Morning Docs!

I recently ran my first half marathon in St. Louis this past Sunday, April 3rd (shout out Jordan). The run went better than expected, pain free, legs and lungs felt strong even with the unexpected amount of hills. However, I woke up Monday (April 4th) with some pain on the lateral part of my right foot, somewhere around the abductor digiti minimi.

On a 1-10 pain scale, I have 0 pain when seated but the pain gradually rises to about a 8 or 9 if I walk or stand for more than 10 minutes. It’s now April 7th, and the pain has not reduced by any substantial amount, what do? I heard from the rehab podcasts that most muscular “injuries” subside within a week so should I wait till this upcoming Sunday to get it checked out or???

My shoes have less than 100 miles on them, I had been exposed to similar distances during training with a couple 10 mile runs and a 12 miler. Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

There is no firm rule regarding the expected timeframe for recovery, so I would not set an absolute date cutoff here.

If you have no pain at rest and can tolerate small amounts of activity, then I would treat this as your entry point – just like we do in the process of rehab under the barbell. Give it time and patience, expect ups and downs along the way, and the odds are that things will improve.

Of course, you can pursue a consult – whether with our team or someone local to you – at any point along the way if you are concerned or need further guidance.
