Evening all, (Evening for me in the UK at least)
TLDR; Didn’t pay much attention to BBM content, then discovered it is an absolute treasure trove! Will definitely be buying one of the 7 week templates.
I first heard of the BBM guys through Alan Thralls youtube channel. But for the longest time I was dismissive and just thought, “Ah some more starting strength coaches.” and didn’t pay them any attention. Without digressing, aspects of the Starting Strength community really just turned me off (The book is FANTASTIC, but I just saw too much arrogance in some of the SS community, you all know what I mean).
I took a break from training for a few weeks, as I was just physically and mentally drained and not in a good place. I’m sure some of you have been there, working lots of overtime to hit project deadlines, while trying to do university work, train very late at night three days a week and still spend time with my wife and son - all while not having seen any of my friends since Christmas.
I came back to train and having detrained I thought right, it’s adherence time lets try this starting strength routine and go from there. Previously I have used All Pro SBR, Greyskull LP and Mike Matthews BLS. While messing around cutting and bulking, gaining and losing practically the same 14lb and same 15-25kg on my lifts and still running lots (My background is distance running and wanted to keep this up). Never getting towards my goal of 180Kg deadlift, 140Kg Squat, 100Kg Bench and 60Kg Press (I actually smashed the press goal back in Jan on GSLP).
Consuming the content of Dr’s Jordan and Austin has really given me a new boost in confidence in myself and my training. They are both strong as hell, are a similar height to me and have achievable physiques that I know I would be more than happy with and most importantly (Unlike some in the strength community) base their training on real evidence and are seem willing to change their opinions if new evidence shows otherwise.
Anyway, I’ve decided just to put on some damn weight and have gone from 175lb to 190+lb in the last month and my lifts just keep going up.
I decided to spend this week testing my maxes for a competition on the nerd fitness forums, https://rebellion.nerdfitness.com/index.php?/topic/109093-bodacious-beach-beasts-2018/ and here they are for the moment:
Squat: 140Kg1 RPE 8.5
Bench: 100Kg1 RPE 8
Deadlift: 160Kg Double Overhand no straps - 170Kg (All the weight I own in my garage gym) with Straps - RPE 9.5
Press: 60Kg*3 RPE 8 - didn’t go higher, ran out of gym time
Powerclean: I can’t get the rack position, I can clean weight up but if I catch 60Kg or higher my tendons/ligaments in my wrists and forearms feel like they are going to explode from the pressure.
Chins: Can still do 8 good full hang reps, which surprises me at this bodyweight.
(Can link vids to the squat/bench/dead).
Pleased with this, I’ll keep on the LP and might start a training log here but I don’t think I have much longer left on LP.
The post turned out longer than I wanted and I still have more I could say! But I’ll leave it at that.
Cheers, Chaosbane
