Hey Docs,
I tried searching for questions similar to this but couldn’t find anything aside from one post talking about a hamstring strain from deadlifting. I don’t know if this is any different so I apologize if it is a repeat.
Background:
Week 5 of GPP endurance (the program has been going great).
25 years old/Male/5’7"/155lbs.
Last PL Meet (3/18): 66kg weight class. 165/102.5/190
Training for the marathon (Chicago Marathon October). Spent the past four months powerlifting after a year-long break from a back injury (PT couldn’t diagnose what it was but said my L3 may have been “turned”(?)).
Case/history:
I was doing the 20:00 HIIT workout with :25 sec sprints on the Assault Bike for the first 10:00 minutes and then switched over to the Air Runner once it opened up (crowded gym) and on the first sprint, I heard a “pop” in my left hamstring and felt an immediate sharp pain (it is more proximal than distal). I chose to switch over to the Air Runner because of #specificity. I have had a grade 1 tear in my right hamstring several years ago and the feeling was similar. As soon as it happened, I didn’t panic and decided to keep moving so I walked for about 10 minutes and the pain subsided slightly (shoutout to Episode 19/20). I don’t think it is a big deal. There is no bruising. I don’t plan on babying it or stop moving but are there any other things I should be doing in addition to this?
I’m trying to stay positive but slightly bummed that I’m at the peaking portion of the program and wanted to see where my deadlift would end up with this program. When I hinge, I can feel exactly where the strain is and it is uncomfortable (duh). Pain is at a 2/10 at rest (it is a dull pain). It is not painful to walk but there is a small throbbing sensation. When practicing different ROM (i.e. squat and deadlift) pain is at a 4/10 and easy to point to where the pain is. I just want to make sure I’m doing the correct thing (feel free to placebo me). I have deadlifts tomorrow, so I plan on working up to a weight that I can manage. Should I rub Peri Rx onto the site? I know hamstring tears are pretty common for the unconditioned individual attempting to do sprint work for the first time but I have done the past three HIIT workouts on the Air Assault so I felt as though I would be okay. In Episode 20, it didn’t sound like you were all opposed toe Bill Starr’s protocol with this type of injury. Should I be doing that instead of what is programmed for tomorrow? Thanks again, docs!
