Is your HLM template an interpretation of Bill Starr’s HLM that includes RPE?
How would you rate Bill Starr’s program, especially as it has stood the test of time since the 70s?

Our HLM template could be viewed as an interpretation of Starr’s HLM, though I think the original setup and rationale behind it isn’t very good.
Consider that HLM at it’s core is meant to have a heavy, light, and medium day- with those adjectives referring to load (not fatigue).
Also consider that recovery and performance are not directly correlated. Recovery from training is always happening 24/7, but thousands of other things go into acute performance.
With that in mind, what are the odds that your performance and ability to tolerate a much higher training stress is reliably higher on one day of the week compared to other days? I would say that on average, people’s performance and work capacity vary day to day and the training stress that is programmed should reflect this in addition to facilitating the desired fitness adaptations.
That is a beautiful and nuanced answer. Thanks Jordan!
Did u run this? If so how did it go?
