How to handle inter-set strength drop-off?

Hello BBM crew,

I am currently running Powerbuilding 1 and am very much enjoying it.
One issue I have run into though is that most time I am unable to hit repeated RPE 8 with the same weight, for example when the program states 6@7, 6@7 x 3 I do

  • 80 kg x 6 @ 7
  • 82.5 kg x 6 @ 8
  • 82.5 kg x 6 @ 8.5
  • 82.5 kg x 6 @ 9

I assume the answer is to reduce weight at least on the last set, but I wanted to double-check.

Thank you

On our second generation Powerbuilding 1 template we have lots of different programming setups. I think the one you’re referencing is:

6 reps @ RPE 7 (76%), 6 reps @ RPE 8 (~78%). Repeat 6 reps @ RPE 8 x 1 set of 6 reps. (~78%)

In this setup, the 6 @ 8 set should be a little heavier than the 6 @ 7 set. However, I would expect someone should be able to repeat the set of 6 reps @ RPE 8 for another set of 6 without it being RPE 10. In this programming approach, the rep and intensity are fixed, whereas the RPE is dynamic (meaning it can go up).

I don’t see any programming that has people repeat 6 reps @ RPE 7 or RPE 8 x 3 additional sets. If that were programmed however, i.e. 6 @ 8, repeat 6 @ 8 x 3 sets, I’d do it how you did it here. I would not reduce weight in this scenario.

Thank you for the answer. I’ll stick to what I am doing now then.

I checked and for example 4 day template - Block 1 Week 3, Day 4 has incline BP with 8@7, 8@8 x 3

On the 4-Day PB 1 template, Block 1 Day 4’s programming for incline BP is:

"8 reps @ RPE 7 (~70%), 8 reps @ RPE 8 (~74%). Repeat 8 reps @ RPE 8 x 2 sets of 8 (~74%)

I would still repeat the weight for the back off sets here!
