Knee travel in squats...

Good morning!

I’ve heard BBM say in several instances that the knees should be set in the first quarter or so of the descent.

  1. Do I have that correct?

  2. Should I be making a conscious effort to stop the knees or is this the natural consequence of appropriately initiating the knees and hips simultaneously?

Thank you for your time,

Andrew

Andrew,

Thanks for the post!

With respect to squat technique, the knees should be set- meaning their forward displacement should be complete- early in the eccentric. Whether that’s the first 1/3, 1/2, 1/4, etc…well, that’s beyond my pay grade.

I’m not sure what you mean by #2. If you’re too vertical for optimal squat performance and/or you’re getting on your toes early in the squat- you might have to consciously stop yourself from pushing your knees as far forward. It is difficult to hypothetically coach a movement I haven’t seen, however.
