Loss of strength

Hi. I posted this in training so it wasn’t approved so I guess this is the proper forum:

Not sure if this should go in training, or pain rehab as I don’t really have pain. Not even sure if a doctor visit would be of value?

so the set up is I had a “kink” in my right shoulder. Not sure how else to describe it. A slight annoying at best pain. A bit of discomfort when sitting. Kinda feels like when ya slept the wrong way and rolled over and “kinked your neck”.

to put strength into context, two Fridays ago I benched a triple@315. Easy peasy. Last Friday I was at work (different equipment, bench height etc) and everything felt “off”. Rack pulls were doable but felt very very hard. Bench was to be a heavy single around 340ish. I banged off a single @275, and failed a single @295. It seemed way too hard. I thought maybe the floor was uneven as the building is in poor shape.

’the next day I was so sore as if I’d never worked out before.

monday I trained at home with familiar equipment. 275 x 3 x 4 bench was programmed. Nope. 225 on the way up (warm ups) were extremely hard. 275 would not come off the cups at all. I was shocked and concerned. All I could do is 135 x 3 x 4. A far cry from 315 x 3 prior.

im at a loss here. There are good workout and not so good workouts but this seems a huge drop in strength.

im not in any pain. The “kink” seems to be gone now. So should I be concerned? Am I going too heavy? Is there something wrong? What do I tell my doc? (Hell just tell me to stick to cardio). Should I seek physio?

I’ll also point out that my sleep, isn’t the greatest and there are some huge family issues/stressors going on as well.

ive taken the rest of the week off and will resume training Monday. I’m hoping this is just my body telling me to,back off.

thoughts?

Hey Old and fat - sorry to hear about your recent experience with training. Tough for us to say what may be ongoing without a consultation with you. We do offer remote consultations. If you are interested please complete our intake paperwork HERE.

You can find general recommendations for training in these scenarios in the article, Pain in training: what do? I know you’ve stated you are not experiencing pain at this time but those general recommendations in the article still apply in these scenarios. This scenario may simply be a cue to change up programming and help with recovery based on sleep issues and life stressors. It’s normal to have fluctuations in loading abilities from session to session and week to week but we can find out more background with a consultation which allows us to provide individual advice and recommendations.
