Hi Dr. Feigenbaum, I was wondering if there were some health issues that can come from eating tuna on a daily basis as a main source of protein. I have heard that too much tuna can cause harm due to the high levels of mercury, but I have also heard it is fine as the levels of selenium in tuna are greater then the levels of mercury. I guess I’m just confused as to what is the truth and what is not so any input you have would be much appreciated.
thanks doc.
Eh, I don’t think that’s a good idea, Nick.
It depends on the type of tuna, your BW, and a host of other factors, but I think eating canned white albacore tuna more than 3x/wk is not worth the risk.

That’s what I was thinking just wanted to get an educated input on the matter. Your reply is much appreciated Dr. Feigenbaum, thankyou.
Nick
Thanks Jordan for the great information. I also like canned tuna as protein source. I checked that my type of tuna (Skipjack) features only about 1/3 of the mercury concentration of white albacore tuna so would it be correct to deduce that eating fewer than 9 cans a week should be safe?
No. I think their recommendation of 3 servings per week still holds.
So there must be another problem than mercury or why would a lower concentration not justify a higher dose?
Dunno, but there are a lot of cheap, portable, and widely available protein sources to be had.
