Newbie Gains

Question about newbie gains. Is the noobie gains a once in a lifetime honeymoon period? What does the current available evidence say about newbie gains. I know that most newbies can still gain some muscle mass and almost everyone will gain strength even on a caloric deficit, but will an obese person lose out on some potential muscle mass gain if he starts out his fitness journey on a caloric deficit instead of eating at a slight surplus or maintenance when he starts out.

I understand that he need to lose fast because of health reasons, but keeping that aside, will he lose out on newbie gains if he starts on a calorie deficit instead of gaining some muscles

I don’t think that anyone should ever manage their training based on the fear of losing or attenuating “newbie” gainzZz, as they don’t reliably occur in all new trainees on a given program. Rather, some people will responder better than others to a given program, whereas others will need something substantially different…which may increase their performance improvement even if they’re no longer a new trainee.
