Sleep?

Hello,

The media tells me I need 7 - 8 hours of sleep. Trending toward 8 to be healthy.

People purporting to “know” fitness tell me I need a minimum of 8 hours for recovery.

An elite crossFit coach I fallow talk about a 7 - 9 hour sleep window being optimal for the general public or people training minimally and recommend a 10 hour minimum.

To my memory I have no example of someone suggesting a maximum number of hours.

My question are…

  1. Is there a recommended maximum number of sleep hours for for each category of individual… non training - elite?

  2. I train NLP Mon, Wed, Fri, about 2 hours. Tue, Thur, Sat, I train 1.5 hours of skills development and ~ 30 min cardio, ~15 min at lactic threshold intensity. Does any one have recommendations or resources for me to reed that would help me nail down a number of hours to maximize recovery at my conditioning level? I.e., is there a sleeping point of no return, or regression for that point?

  2. There is not going to be one exact, consistent number of hours that you need to hit. Is your performance good, and improving? You’re good. Is your performance poor? Try getting a bit more sleep and see if that helps.

Good read, thanks.

Just want to say that I completely appreciate the fact that you responded with an article.

I can just see it now…

Gone are the days in health and fitness where the casual conversation is without references…

It’s a brave new world!
