Ok talking with some training buddies regarding squat and foot position. We all agreed its shoulder width apart . But is it shoulder width at the heel , mid foot or toes ? Each give a different gap and each of picked different stance !
Doesn’t really matter, up to personal preference. Everyone’s got different anthropology that makes “shoulder width” different for everyone anyways. Whichever you feel strongest, most comfortable with, and can train productively over time is going to be your best option. Same goes for toe angle.
I was interested in how each of us measured shoulder width gap . Regardless of the actually shoulder width of the individual. , measuring at the heel will give a different gap to the mid foot and again to the toe of the same person . All be it only a few inches. The fact we all agreed its a stance shoulder width apart and differed on the foot placement or measure point was interesting .
A good starting point is the place the heels in line with the shoulders - as in if you had a plumb line down from the middle of the shoulder socket it would intersect the middle of the heel. However, this will likely need to be adjusted based on your anthropometry. You may not need to adjust it at all, maybe only marginally, or maybe it is the toe angle that may need to change. But the goal is to find the strongest foot placement for you.
Just don’t be like the personal “trainers” at my gym who ask people to put their feet to the supports…parallel…and squat. Because regardless of the answer to your question, that is the wrong answer.
