Water intake

Doctors, I’m wondering what your recommendations are for daily water intake for general health of a moderately active barbell trainer. A gallon a day? More? Or should we ascribe to the notions of cranky people and only drink water if we sense we are thirsty (i.e., do NOT bother keeping water bottles handy)?

About 4.2L for men and 3.7L for women who train is a reasonable starting point, though this needs to be adjusted for the individual.

How does one drink 4,2 liters of water and have time for daily activities without being on the toilet?
